Overcoming Feelings

December 17, 2019

“And being in an agony [of mind], He prayed [all the] more earnestly and intently, and His sweat became like great [a]clots of blood dropping down upon the ground.”

Luke 22:44

“And after going a little farther, He fell face down and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible [that is, consistent with Your will], let this cup [a]pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.”

Matthew 26:39

Pushing past feelings is definitely not a trend of our current society. With everything at the touch of our fingers technology has conditioned our response to be more immediate than ever. As believers however there certainly will be times when we have to push past the immediate voice of our feelings and emotions to ensure we are not acting in a flesh driven state but being led by the spirit.

In Luke we notice Jesus based his actions on the will of the Father. As such he was free to accomplish every purpose the Father set before him. This type of freedom of choice is the response that must abound in us regardless if it feels natural or not. We cannot be manipulated by fear or rejection of others but solely moved by the will of the Father.

Trusting God is a decision. When we base our feelings and inward emotions on God’s principles and directions, whether given through the Bible or his voice, we allow our spirit to be aligned with His. This is why reading the word daily and communicating with God through prayer is so important. It can be difficult to identify and apply the truth when you are only familiar with the natural, society driven response.

As we progress in our spiritual walk with Christ, God desires us to become more mature and rely less on milk (feelings) like infants.

Pushing past feelings and relying on the word of God is one avenue to kingdom success. The more biblical truths are understood and applied, the more our feelings will catch up.

Fellowship Question
