“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He [a]takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me."
John 15:1-4
Human nature has a predisposition to dependence and belonging. The high school I graduated from had an average of 4,000 students enrolled annually. In order to not get lost in the crowd, teachers encouraged students to get involved in activities such as sports, language clubs, drama, etc. in order for students to remain focused and accountable.
As I transitioned into adulthood I found the same longing and desire to belong.
In my late teens, I knew of Jesus Christ but did not fully accept him in my heart nor walk in this ways. As such, the need for belonging was fleshly rooted and drew my desire to toxic relationships and associations that were ultimately spiritually unhealthy.
Once I accepted Christ and matured through wisdom and revelation I understood that the need to be dependent is a natural instinct as we were created within the image of Christ, who was 100% dependent on the Father.
The desire to be plugged into something is rooted by our existence to be apart of Christ.
The flesh is looking and seeking for that dependence. This is why some people are attracted to different groups or relationships knowing it is opposite of their well being. They may know that it is harmful or displeasing to authorities or even their families but because it satisfies the need of belonging, they entertain and welcome the activities associated with it regardless of the consequences.
Could it be that the need to belong is what attracts and holds people in bondage? The thought of letting go is so frightful that though ultimately harmful, staying is easier, more manageable and familiar.
There is hope.
The interdependence desire came from the one who is here to give it. Jesus Christ is here to fill each dependent void with His love, grace and mercy. Regardless of how the desire was previously filled He is faithful to remain in us if we allow Him. He may prune, pluck, trim or replace any association contrary to His will but we can be certain it is for our best interest.
This is how we experience true oneness. True peace. True fellowship.
